Chris shares his thoughts about the highlights of his career, life work balance, and why he likes working at Epicor.

Epicor: How long have you been with Epicor?
Chris: I joined DocStar in September 2016. After we were acquired by Epicor, I moved over to the digital content development team in July 2017.

Epicor: Can you please share a few highlights of your career?
Chris: Working with the digital content team to revamp our methodology of delivering training content has been one of the best collaborative and creative experiences of my career so far. I enjoyed working with so many like-minded people on sharing ideas and putting those into practice at the same time. Everything we thought we knew was challenged by that experience, which was fantastic.

Epicor Team Member Spotlight-Chris ScharlingA positive team response is awesome. I've never been a part of a team as fun, talented, and focused as this group. The entire experience came together as an affirming signal that we were on the right track.

It was terrific to meet our customers and partners face to face at Insights. I'm a big believer in the idea that our customers are where the money comes from, and that is what puts food on the table, so helping them is something I take seriously. Being able to meet them, put a face to the email address, and learn about their lives, experiences, and interests was truly awesome.

Epicor: What have you developed in the past that was memorable to you?
Chris: As a lifelong video game lover and musician, working on Guitar Hero and getting one of my songs featured in the game was something out of my dreams.

I also worked on the dialog and sound effects for the last Marvel Ultimate Alliance game for the Xbox 360 but the most exciting part of the work was tying together the music and games. I composed the soundtrack for a Nintendo 3DS game called Pet Zombies, and worked on a few others as well.

Epicor: What do you do outside of work for fun and relaxation that contributes to your work life balance?
Chris: My family is pretty busy, so we're always trying to find things to do together when we can. We love traveling when we're able, and there is a lake nearby where we go to enjoy kayaking during the warmer months.

My son and I love playing video games together and being creative, whether it's Mario Kart, Zelda, Minecraft, or building with LEGO. My wife and I are huge food lovers, so we're always trying to find new places to eat and new recipes.

Epicor: How do you incorporate your past work experiences to your current job at Epicor?
Chris: I started my career as a recording engineer and voice over instructor, then moved to game development before arriving at Epicor.

I think where I am now is the perfect combination of all of those skills. I'm able to bring my experience with voice over to make my narration friendly and effective, and share my experience with the team.

I've always had a love of teaching, and I think having fun should be a part of everything you do. I love how Nintendo incorporates surprise and delight into all of their experiences, and I try to do that whenever I can find a space to do so.

Epicor: Why do you like working at Epicor?
Chris: I love having creative freedom and being able to impact our customers in ways that truly help them.

Whether I'm building something in our software, writing, recording audio, animating, testing out a new feature, or shooting and editing video, my job role plays really well to areas that I feel strong in. In addition, I know that there are always other areas where I can find room to grow.

I also really love how everyone has a voice and an opportunity to contribute as an equal. I feel that we're in an environment where every opinion is valid because we all want to push each other and our products-be it videos, documentation, or the software itself-to be the best it can be.
